New Year, New Me Interiors?
Which of the 2024 Interior Design Trends Should I Choose?

You will have seen all over social platforms already this January people’s ‘Ins’ & ‘Outs’ for the year ahead, and the world of Interior Design is no different, with the likes of Vogue, House Beautiful, Elle Décor etc. sharing which trends are showing up as ‘In’ for 2024. But how do you read through the lines and decide what will work (and stand the test of time – way beyond the new trends of 2025...), when often you see contradictions from the experts? Let’s take a look at some of this year’s themes that seemingly go head-to-head.

Bold Colours vs. Muted Tones

Bold colours can create atmosphere and interest in a space, and for those unafraid to unleash their inner-Warhol, you can create spaces with attitude that truly reflect individual style. This 2024 trend will likely send those who lean more into the neutral aesthetic which has been showing up across social media long before 2024, into a bit of a spin – how on earth do you do ‘Bold Colours’ in a ‘Muted Tones’ home?

If the thought of introducing a Bold Colour piques your interest, you could try using colours that take baby steps into the Bold Colour world; accessorise with burnt oranges, deep sea blues or earthy greens mixed into a canvas of Muted Tones. Explore what you like, and how ‘Bold’ you want to go without just doing it because someone said you should!

Wallpaper in Unexpected Places Vs. Statement Tiles

We love using wallpapers in Guest bedrooms and Children’s rooms, and although Bathrooms could be a surprising place to find a wallpaper, it’s not a complete no-go, so long as you use the right paper for the job. Specialist wallpaper to accommodate more humid environments is available, should you want to use it in a bathroom, or kitchen – used in smaller spaces an interesting wallpaper can become a talking point and allow a little extroverted flair to show up, in stereotypically functional rooms.

Similarly, using Statement Tiles can draw out those reactions behind an unassuming doorway, and it’s not always the bolder the tile, the better. Sometimes it’s in the placement of the tile within the space, that creates the statement. Details matter.

Understated Opulence Vs. Futuristic Materials

What if you didn’t have to choose between the two, and you could have both? Sustainability is a trend that is leading thinking to achieve a much wider goal for the design industry, and careful attention is being paid to materials and where they come from, for use in designs. People are creating furnishings and products that are more sustainable, interesting, and beautiful. Cork products, unlike other wood products, can be harvested from the cork tree and this doesn’t result in the tree being cut down – the harvesting process is in fact, entirely sustainable, with the cork regenerating afterwards.

Mushrooms can be used to create alternatives to wood and leather (great for Vegan-centric designs), and development of these products has been around for almost 10 years now (Article by Knuvl Sheikh via Popsci.com).

While mushroom leathers are not as hard wearing as their animal equivalents, using them in the right areas allows a touch of opulence to be added to designs in a sustainable way.

An easy way to incorporate a little hotel luxury and sustainability into your everyday – reusable, refillable products; we like these from Bower Collective.

Choosing a glass or more sustainable plastic dispenser for shower products will help you to say goodbye to single-use plastic bottles.

When 2024 Trends Collide – Some of Our Favourites

The depth of colour in this deep brown, wood panelled bedroom gives an instant cosy feeling, and the lighting enhances the space with a sense of Understated Opulence in the everyday. Imagine the feeling of the Egyptian Cotton bed linen in this design as you settle in for the night – pure luxury.

Statement Tiles, Bold Colours, and a feeling of Understated Opulence; this bathroom design has it all. The rich colours and brass finishes throughout work perfectly to create a space that makes an impact and feels luxurious. If you need any excuse for a long soak in the bath, this design is it.

This lounge design is clean and simple, the wood panelling and touches of brass within finishes add Understated Opulence to a space of Muted Tones. Incorporating timeless design elements, allows you to immerse yourself in understated luxury.

Ultimately, interiors are about your story, how you live, and what you love – so you will likely evolve within your space over time. If there’s a trend that you like the look of (and not just because you think you should like it) and feel that it could add a little something-something to your home…our advice…when design is personalised, it’s timeless.
